In a study called The Impact of Color in Marketing, researchers found that people can make up their mind about product choices based on colors alone in less than 90 seconds. What’s even more interesting is that the “use of colors can contribute not only to differentiating products from competitors but also to influencing moods and feelings – positively or negatively – and therefore, to attitude towards certain products.”
Black and white often features in interior design when the desired impact is to be modern and crisp. Inject primary or neon colors to black and white for a funky finish.
As we move further into the digital age, there is a growing effort to keep our feet planted in the real world. As stress and pressure increases, there’s more emphasis than ever to embrace the natural, wholesome and healthy aspects of life. In 2017, the Pan tone Color of the Year was called Greenery and it truly reflected this movement.
The combination works because it creates ultimate balance. Black is strong and dominant and white is peaceful and pure. From a tonal point of view they are polar opposites, but it is this contrast that makes black and white so effective together.
This is a combination of 2 to 5 (ideally 2 to 3) colors that are to each other on the color circle. It creates a calming, likeable impression. Here’s an example of combining analogous muted colors: yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green.
When it comes to classic color combinations, it doesn’t get any more timeless than black and white. But timeless doesn’t mean stagnant. From looking at 2020’s trend predictions, we can see that black and white is going to be huge.
