Complementary (also known as supplementary or contrasting) colors are colors that sit opposite of each other on the color circle. The combination of such colors creates a vivid and energizing effect, especially at maximum saturation.
This is a scheme that includes one primary and two complementary colors, plus an additional color that highlights the accents. An example: blue-green, blue-violet, orange-red, orange-yellow.
Used most often in bold tones to grab attention, this year’s trend is in tweaking the saturation of either shade. This pastel take of the complementary blue and orange doesn’t diminish its effect. The energy from this blood orange shade sets off the soft powder blue perfectly. Blue is widely used to represent business and is always effective in marketing and promotion but the pop of orange shows that you are not afraid to stand out.
Black is also the color of nobility and elegance. But Adobe doesn’t play the game of the elites here. The trick is that Adobe is playing with concepts, by playing with colors and fonts: young generation (red, blue), education (dark blue), skills, the aspiration to high-class (black).
Purple is a strong and powerful color with positive connotations like magic, luxury and creativity. For such an attention grabbing color, it’s still surprisingly uncommon. In fashion and interiors it tends to be used sparingly, but if there was ever a time to go crazy with purple, it is now.
We’ve been used to associate this dark shade of blue with the uniforms of the navy officers and thus with the qualified and skilled establishments. Actually, dark blue has been used as a color for the navy officer uniform since 1748 when the British Royal Navy introduced it for the first time.
